A group of people holding handsDescription automatically generatedThe City is trying to understand how our residents use the internet and where the digital divide exists in our community. We need your help to test internet speeds; it only takes a few minutes and can be done at: https://broadband.escondido.org/

We will be hosting a workshop on October 24 at the East Valley Community Center Citrus Room, 2245 E Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA 92027 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 pm. All are welcome to attend and no RSVP is required.

During the workshop we will hear from the community about current issues with accessing the internet, using your devices, and learning how to use digital services. Everyone will have a chance to share with the City and the broader community personal experiences and challenges.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Review

On June 7, 2023 the Escondido City Council approved the 2023-2028 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). This document outlines data and community feedback about the City's economy and outlines a five-year plan to improve the local economy.

Let's dive into the first section of the CEDS which takes a deep look at the City's Economic Data:

Most industries in Escondido do not provide enough local jobs for Escondido residents, the major exceptions being Construction, Retail Trade, and Health Care, the latter stemming from the Palomar Medical Center anchoring regional employment in the industry. Other industries, especially higher-income fields like Professional/Scientific/ Technical Services and Manufacturing, require Escondido workers to commute elsewhere.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

Thieves Apprehended After Vehicle Chase

Last week, three men went into a local store and began taking merchandise and hiding it in their pockets and bags. The men left the store with about $5,000 worth of goods. They then got into a vehicle and tried to leave the area. One of our officers was able to locate the vehicle however a chase on to the freeway and then back into the city ensued. At one point, one of the passengers jumped out of the moving vehicle and was injured. The vehicle finally struck another vehicle and the remaining men got out and fled. All three men were arrested. The teamwork of the officers, detectives, and a San Diego PD helicopter helped resolve this crime.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

A group of people in yellow jacketsDescription automatically generatedOn October 9, Fire crews participated in training provided by and at the Sempra Powerplant in San Diego. The walk through of the facility highlighted the major components and site safety of the local powerplant. This type of training is invaluable to our department and gives us an upper edge when using firefighting tools and techniques.

On October 11, Our Escondido City Council approved the transition for Escondido Fire to move to North Comm for Fire and EMS dispatch. This new move to a dispatch center designed specifically for EMS and Fire, along with joining nearly all of our neighboring Fire Agencies, will increase the service capability and safety for our citizens. Many of us at Escondido Fire have spent our entire careers with our Escondido Dispatchers being the "steady voice"on the other side of the radio. Thank You to all our Dispatchers who have, and continue to, "Hold the Line"for the great community we serve.

On October 13, Fire crews were dispatched to Country Club Lane under NB-I15 for a vehicle accident. The vehicle had veered off the freeway, landed on the embankment and caught fire. When crews arrived on scene, they discovered a fully engulfed vehicle fire with a victim inside. Crews were able to extinguish vehicle, along with nearby brush but unfortunately the victim sustained fatal injuries. California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

On October 14, Fire crews were dispatched to SB-I15, north of El Norte, for a car fire. Crews arrived on scene to discover a fully engulfed sedan in the slow lane. Crews quickly extinguished the fire. No injuries were sustained.

Crews assisted children and their families with making toy fire engines and answered questions about their jobs. Community events like this are an important part of showing our residents what we do and who we are, so we were thankful for the invite.
