Water Professionals Week

It is Water Professionals Week! The City of Escondido supplies water to approximately 26,000 residential, commercial, and agricultural customers with water from the Escondido-Vista Water Treatment Plant.

The Canals Division maintains the Escondido Canal, which transfers water from Lake Henshaw to Lake Wohlford.

The Water Division maintains and operates the water distribution system, consisting of approximately 26,000 service meters, 440 miles of pipelines, 50 pressure-reducing/regulating stations, five pump stations, and 11 reservoirs.

The Lakes Division also operates Escondido's two lakes, Dixon and Wohlford, for recreational purposes and water storage and supply.

Thank you to all the water professionals for the important work you do to keep water flowing safely and reliably to the City of Escondido!

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Review

On June 7, 2023 the Escondido City Council approved the 2023-2028 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). This document outlines data and community feedback about the City's economy and outlines a five-year plan to improve the local economy.

Let's dive into the first section of the CEDS which takes a deep look at the City's Economic Data:

A graph with numbers and dotsDescription automatically generated

Escondido appears to have the most intensive industrial economy among its peers in terms of jobs per 100,000 square feet of industrial space, at nearly one thousand jobs. Most of Escondido's North County neighbors (in yellow) have similarly high industrial job concentrations, but Escondido has the lowest proportion of non-residential space zoned for industrial use.

However, this is only a measure of interior square footage, rather than of zoned land. With Escondido's relatively high concentration of industrial outdoor storage, as opposed to indoor warehouses (for which Ontario is a major hub), this figure may be skewed. Many of Escondido's industrially zoned areas are occupied by car lots and auto repair, as well as construction offices, all of which employ more outdoor storage and parking than typical light industries.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

Motor Officers Make Strong Showing in Local Training and Competition

Congratulations to Motor Officers Tyler Herrmann, Paul Smyth and Pete McCollough for strong showings during the Terry Bennett Memorial Police Training and Competition in Oceanside.

The officers competed in several events and had very strong showings, including a third-place finish in the two-man competition, and fourth place finishes in the tethered category, slow course and the four-man category (ridden with a Coronado officer.)

The 21st annual event provided invaluable training for your motor officers.

Escondido Narcotics Detective Awarded 'Al Stewart' Award

A glass trophy on a tableDescription automatically generatedSpecial Investigations Unit Detective Steve Brown was awarded the California Narcotic's Officer Association 'Al Stewart' award for his outstanding enforcement and investigative ability. His dedication, duty and commitment to the community is evidenced by him being a model employee for the City of Escondido and a truly hard-working officer. He is passionate about putting criminals in jail and making Escondido a safer community. Over the last year, he has been directly or indirectly involved in the seizure or purchase of over 143.8 pounds of methamphetamine, 12.6 grams of heroin, 2.4 pounds of cocaine, 9.6 pounds of fentanyl, 12.2 pounds of mushrooms, 13 firearms and $170,500 cash. Aside from all that great work, Detective Brown devotes his free time to supporting his own children in their sports endeavors and helping the officers at the police department stay healthy by assisting in the design of a gym.

Congratulations Detective Brown. Well deserved!

PAL hosts Rugby Camp

PAL hosted an outstanding Rugby clinic this weekend. The San Diego Legion brought out five players, their head coach, a film crew and many props (in addition to equipment, stickers and t-shirts). The Spartan Youth Rugby League also brought out coaches and PAL had four coaches to help.

41 children attended the clinic, and a fun time was had by all. It was a hot day and everyone stayed well hydrated. Two officers brought out their children and an EPD K9 handler came out with his partner to say hi to the kids. The children were impressed and asked him a lot of good questions.

Several school officials were at the camp as well. In the words of retired Fire Captain Bill Atkins, who now coaches with the Spartan Youth League: "First, thank you for everyone's work in organizing Saturday's clinic. Al Owens and the PAL took the initial steps toward introducing the game and culture of rugby to the youth of EscondidoNext, there is inspiration to continue the introduction of rugby into the Escondido schools. Most notable is this inspiration is rooted in the values rugby holds true. The very values each of the aforementioned organizations demonstrates and teaches. A simple youth rugby clinic has become a springboard for something greater.
