POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

Structure Fire

On October 25, Escondido Police Department and Escondido Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire, occupied by one person. Officers arrived and located the structure engulfed in flames. Escondido Fire entered the structure and located one person deceased.

A Little Bit About Escondido's Response to Fire Incidents:

After the last signs of flames have been extinguished and all that is heard is the sound of the final fire apparatus' diesel engine fading into the distance, the work of the Escondido Fire Department's (EFD) Investigators and Inspectors begins. EFD is joined by the Escondido Police Department's (EPD) Arson Investigators to conduct a cooperative and collaborative investigation as to the cause, origin, and criminality of fires within the City of Escondido.

As noted in the chart below, 2020 saw a significant spike in reported arson incidents within San Diego County. This figure may be misleading, as it only records reported arson incidents and does not include the numerous 'suspicious' fires investigated by EFD and EPD personnel. Escondido has not been immune to the county-wide trend. Within the last calendar year, EFD and EPD personnel have worked in conjunction to investigate a serial arsonist who set upwards of 19 different blazes, a mobile home arson in which children were endangered, a human caused fire at an elementary school which caused upwards of $50,000 in damage, and a residential fire which claimed the life of a female resident. The City of Escondido and its residents are fortunate to have a group of individuals with the drive, knowledge, and mindset to serve them in this difficult environment.

Mission and Quince Operation

On October 27, members of patrol, Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS), Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT), Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU), and Special Investigations Unit (SIU) collaborated to conduct an operation in the area around Mission Ave. and Quince St. The operation focused on nuisance problems that have been occurring in the vicinity. Traffic stops, pedestrian stops, and checks at the hotel were conducted. The operation ended with 2 felony arrests, 4 misdemeanor arrests, a 5150 California Welfare & Institutions Code (W&I) hold, and over 14 additional contacts.

Did You Know?

Officers, civilians, PERT, Community Service Officers, detectives, and Custody Transport Officers all assisted in this operation to make it a success. The EPD hopes to continue these efforts in the future.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

As noted in the Police report above, on October 26 the Fire Department responded to a fully engulfed structure fire on Valley Center Road, just north of Lake Wohlford Road. The main body of fire was quickly knocked down, but unfortunately the occupant was found deceased inside the home. Firefighters remained on scene for over three hours containing smoldering hot spots within the residence and assisting with the investigation. Valley Center Road was completely closed to north bound traffic for nearly an hour and one lane remained closed throughout the incident due to 1,300 feet of supply hose deployed along the roadside. In total, six fire engines, one truck, one rescue ambulance, two Battalion Chiefs and three Fire Investigators responded to the fire. The fire's cause is under investigation.

On October 27, firefighters from Fire Station #2 visited Kings Academy on Lincoln Ave and gave a small presentation in their full turnout gear, talked about fire safety and the appropriate use of 9-1-1, and provided a tour of the Fire Engine and Ambulance.
