Road Closure Alert: On Sunday, January 15, a landslide caused by the recent barrage of atmospheric rivers forced an indefinite closure of Lake Wohlford Road between Valley Parkway and Oakvale Road. City of Escondido Public Works crews were dispatched to clear the road, but inspections revealed large boulders presenting imminent fall hazards.

The risk to the public was deemed severe, and a contractor was secured with the capabilities to stabilize the hillside and safely remove the boulders. The contractor has been mobilized but needs to acquire materials to complete the task. While repairs are made, travelers of Lake Wohlford Road should use Woods Valley Road to Valley Center Road.

The City will be able to open the road once repairs are made, and inspections are passed.

1/23/2023 Road Closure Update: The contractor working to stabilize the bluffs overlooking Lake Wohlford Road has begun loading in the equipment needed to repair the compromised slopes from this month’s record-breaking rain. They estimate 2-3 weeks of work needs to be completed to make the area stable and safe. In the meantime, we ask all drivers to observe the traffic control measures in place to ensure public safety and allow the contractor to complete the emergency project as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience.

1/31/2023 Road Closure Update: The contractor completed repairs at the primary site of the damaged bluffs overlooking Lake Wohlford Road. In addition to shoring up additional affected areas, the contractor is working with the County of San Diego to repair areas in their jurisdiction. We anticipate the partial reopening of Lake Wohlford to happen later this week. As the road reopens, please be aware of workers in the area and possible lane diversions as we strive to reopen the road as safely and quickly as possible. As a reminder, all businesses along Lake Wohlford Road are open and accessible via Valley Center and Woods Valley Road while the hillside stabilization process continues.

ATTENTION: In order to protect Lake Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.
