Environmental Programs Intern

 

The City of Escondido’s Environmental Programs Division is seeking an intern to support the storm water, water conservation and environmental compliance (pre-treatment) programs.

 

We are seeking an intern with the following skills:

Ability to use conventional office software such as Microsoft Office Products, Adobe, and Google Earth.

Ability to use web-based and paper records to research information.

Ability to work collaboratively with others within and outside of the City of Escondido to collect and document information in a systematic way.

A self-starter who can manage their time, plan their tasks, and execute them with minimal direction.

Ability to work onsite at Escondido City Hall and at locations within the City of Escondido (valid California Driver’s License required).

Ability to work in a professional environment where you encounter members of the public.

References and a background check (including fingerprinting) will be required before a volunteer intern can commence work.

Ability to communicate clearly in written and oral formats.

 

The intern will be responsible for:

Provision of support for inspection programs.  This will require participation in drive-by inspections and limited on-site inspections under supervision.

Acting as standby staff (during working hours), able to conduct upstream investigations when the monitoring team is in the creek monitoring storm drain outfalls. 

Preparing outreach materials for, and potentially attending, special events.

Under supervision, complete routine tasks relating to complaints, water violations, and follow-up from inspections.  Generate routine letters for water violations and storm water violations. 

Entering inspection data consistently and correctly into spreadsheets and/or the City’s web-based Asset Management System.

Organization of electronic folders, ensuring that files are located in the correct folder and under supervision deleting duplicate files.

As needed, supporting special projects which are not inspection-related. These may include: soliciting and organizing data from local, state, or federal agencies or from public databases, reviewing water quality data, City records, and wetland permitting documents, and producing legible summaries of research.

 

Hours/Pay:

Work schedule can be defined by the intern, but would be conducted during normal office hours, Monday to Friday.

There is no wage payment for this position, it is fully voluntary.
