Share Your Vision of the Library's Future

Contact: Cynthia Smith,  760-839-4329

The Escondido Public Library invites the community to help develop a dynamic new vision for the Library’s future by attending public meetings on April 27, 30, and May 1.

Escondido Public Library has been a vital part of the community’s educational, cultural, and economic development for more than a century. The current library building, located downtown, can no longer accommodate the materials, services, and technology to support the community’s 21st century needs. Studies over the past five years have confirmed the need for an expanded library and City Council recently approved the initiation of a conceptual design study to reorganize the current building and add a new state-of-the-art wing.

Broad-based community input and ideas will be essential to making the project a success. Community members are invited to participate in any or all of the following opportunities to learn about the library conceptual design project and provide input. Community Meetings will be held on the following dates:

  • Saturday, April 27 – At the Escondido Public Library’s booth at the Día de los Niños festival in Grape Day Park, 321 North Broadway in Escondido, from 11:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M.
  • Tuesday, April 30 – At a public meeting at the Escondido Public Library (Turrentine Room), 239 South Kalmia Street in downtown Escondido, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
  • Wednesday, May 1 – At a public meeting at Oak Hill School (Multipurpose Room), 1820 Oak Hill Drive in Escondido, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. This meeting’s agenda will be the same as the April 30 public meeting. Community members are welcome to attend both meetings.

The Escondido Library Foundation has been actively involved in addressing the need for an expanded Library. Jack Anderson, Foundation President and member of the steering team for the Library’s expansion, is looking forward to receiving ideas from the public. He said, “We encourage your participation in this important community process. The Library is an integral part of our community life, and the design process will bring about a specific plan that will improve and strengthen the Library’s capacity and user-friendly capabilities.”

As part of the process, plans to seek input also include a survey that will be available on the Escondido Public Library’s website. Updates and additional events on the conceptual design for an expanded Library will be posted on the Escondido Public Library’s website http://library.escondido.org as the project progresses.

The Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street in downtown Escondido. For more information on this and other Library events, go to http://library.escondido.org or contact 760-839-4601.

Arbor Day Celebration in Escondido

Contact: Joyce Masterson, 760-839-4621

Escondido will observe Arbor Day by holding a cleanup and tree planting event on Friday, April 26, 2013. Beginning at approximately 7:30 a.m. ten tree crews from the private sector will join with City public works staff to perform tree maintenance at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido and Grape Day Park. Due to safety concerns, various areas of the park will be closed to the public until approximately 2:00 p.m. while the work is completed. A ceremonial tree planting by the Mayor and local school children also will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Grape Day Park.

The event is being coordinated by the Professional Tree Care Association of San Diego (PTCA) in partnership with the City of Escondido, Grangetto’s Farm and Garden Supply, the California Center for the Arts, Escondido and the San Diego Urban Forest Council.  Persons interested in volunteering may contact Mike Reed at 760-802-9041.

Every Arbor Day PTCA has volunteers from its membership donate labor and equipment to non-profit organizations to assist them in tree maintenance they might otherwise not be able to afford. This year they will be volunteering in two locations: the California Center for the Arts/Grape Day Park in Escondido, and also Girl Scout Headquarters in San Diego.  Over the years, the PTCA has assisted the City of San Diego at numerous park locations, The Boy Scouts, Quail Botanical Gardens, Campfire USA and many others.  This will be the 20th year the PTCA has provided free labor and expertise to beautify the urban forest in San Diego.

PTCA estimates the value of the donated labor at approximately $20,000.

Escondido to Host 2013 AMGEN Tour of California Charity Gala

Contact: Joyce Masterson, 760-839-4621

The City of Escondido and AEG will host the Official 2013 Amgen Tour of California Team Presentation and Gala on Friday, May 10, 2013, at Escondido’s California Center for the Arts Concert Hall.

Titled “Escondido Out Front,” the evening will showcase the best of local entertainment, attractions and cuisine, and serve to introduce the teams and riders who will race in the eighth annual Amgen Tour of California, which begins in Escondido May 12. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer™ initiative — a complementary component to Amgen’s race sponsorship that celebrates cancer survivors and raises awareness about the free support services available to people affected by cancer.

The Amgen Tour of California is the nation’s most prestigious professional cycling stage race. This year’s edition will feature 16 teams competing through nearly 750 miles of California’s most iconic roads, bridges and towns, with 12 cities hosting race starts and finishes from May 12-19. The race will run south to north for the first time this year, with the overall start beginning at 11:15 a.m. in Escondido.

The gala provides the Escondido community and southern California cycling enthusiasts the unique opportunity to meet and mingle with the world-class cyclists competing in the race. The racers are the world’s elite, from the ranks of Olympians, world champions, national champions and Tour de France contenders.

“The official Gala and Team Presentation has become one of the great traditions of the Amgen Tour of California. It’s not only a special event for the fans that are lucky enough to attend, but it’s also an evening that is memorable for the athletes as well,” said Kristin Bachochin, executive director of the race and senior vice president of AEG Sports. “It’s the first time competitors formally come face to face, as well as meet the race fans, and the riders begin to get amped up for the race ahead. It’s a highlight of the race experience for any cycling fan, not to mention the riders themselves.”

The evening will include a local wine tasting reception with the opportunity to meet some very special “guests” from the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind items in a silent auction, a seated dinner featuring local cuisine and perfectly paired wines, capped off by the official team presentation.

“This is the first gala event of this magnitude to take place on the Concert Hall Stage,” said Jennifer Nichols, gala chair. “The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is thrilled to be hosting the kickoff event for the Overall Start in Escondido.”

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the California Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Tickets are $125 with a 10 percent discount on purchases of three or more. Table sponsorships are available for $1,500. For tickets and information, contact Jennifer Nichols, Gala Chair jnichols@escondido.org.
