Bilingual Book Discussion Group Meets at Escondido Public Library

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Paul Crouthamel, 760-839-4814

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s Bilingual Book Discussion Group, will meet on Saturday, January 31, 2015, from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. Yo antes de ti/Me Before You, by JoJo Moyes, is the selected book for January. Participants discuss books bilingually, in English and Spanish, enabling them to enjoy great literature in either language. Rincón Literario also provides an opportunity to improve either English or Spanish language skills.

Yo antes de ti/Me Before You is a best-selling novel, with wide critical acclaim. Moyes introduces Will Traynor, a formerly high-flying, thrill-seeking executive now confined to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic. Louisa Clark, a 26-year-old working-class girl, is hired by Will’s mother to boost his morale. After the accident, the only power Will believes he has is the power to end his life. Louisa has never fully lived—before meeting Will her plans didn’t extend beyond their tiny English town. In Lou, he discovers an unexpected outlet for his thwarted energies—teaching her how to exert her own autonomy. Deciding that the only chance she has of getting Will to take an interest in his own future is to make him take an interest in hers, Louisa devises character-building adventures they can undertake together for her benefit, hoping it will give him a reason to live. All signs point to romance and a happy ending for the pair, but Moyes has something more heartbreakingly truthful in mind; sometimes love isn’t enough.

Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of the month to explore literature published in English and Spanish. In February, readers will discuss Has visto a Maria? / Have You Seen Marie? by Sandra Cisneros.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public. For more information about future Rincón Literario selections and other Library programs, visit the Library’s website at library.escondido.org or call Paul Crouthamel, Adult Services Librarian, at 760-839-4814.
