Library storytimes reflect research that shows that critical language and literacy development occurs in the first three years of life. The Library’s storytime programs address early literacy skills that are important in preparing children for school and helping them learn to read and write. While the programs are fun for children, parents will appreciate that storytimes help children recognize names and sounds of letters, enjoy books, and hear and play with sounds and words that develop speech, and build vocabulary. Participating in storytime has the added benefit of developing comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Youth Services Librarian, Lalitha Nataraj, plans each storytime with the following in mind: parents are their child’s first and most important teacher; and storytime facilitates bonding between parents and young children. It’s a positive experience with books and play that leads to a love of reading.
The Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street in Escondido. Library programs are free and open to the public and sponsored by Friends of the Escondido Public Library.
