Throwback Thursday Grape Day Festival

Did you know that Grape Day Park is named after the Grape Day Festival, which started in 1908? After taking a few years off due to the pandemic, the Grape Day Festival returned this September. At its peak, thousands came to celebrate Escondido's sweet grapes and citrus. Festival attendees would stomp grapes then as they do now at the annual event. Today, Grape Day Park is home to the Escondido History Center, the keeper of Escondido's local history. Stop in and meet the excellent staff who carefully preserve our history and will answer all your questions about Escondido's past.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

On October 10, the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a possible fire in the area of the 1400 block of Broadway Place and dispatched a structure fire response. While responding several fire units reported a large smoke column from a distance, and due to the potential for the fire to spread and the threat to life and property, a working fire upgrade was dispatched. The first arriving officer reported a single story, single family residence with a large amount of smoke and fire in the garage and possibly spreading into the structure.

Aggressive action by the firefighters contained and controlled the fire in approximately 20 minutes. The home sustained extensive fire damage throughout the dwelling. There were no injuries to firefighters however, two civilians sustained minor smoke inhalation and were evaluated by Paramedics. In all 4 fire engines, 1 truck company, 2 rescue ambulances and 2 Battalion Chiefs responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A gift card from the California Fire Foundation was provided for immediate emergency aid to the residents.
