April 10-16 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by so many community volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to give back to Escondido.  We take this time to say thank you to our community members who give so much.

In the Library and Community Services Department, volunteers can be seen daily at both the Escondido Public Library and the Park Avenue Community Center. The Library has over 200 active teen and adult volunteers working in a variety of ways, from shelving books and preparing materials, to working in the Friends of the Library Book Shop, tutoring adults to improve their literacy skills, conducting story time programs, and serving on support group boards, such as Library Trustees, Foundation or Friends groups.  As a way to say thank you, and celebrate their service, the Library honors its volunteers this week by hosting a luncheon at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

The Escondido Senior Center, located in the Park Avenue Community Center, has over 150 active volunteers. The Escondido Senior Center will host its annual “Our Volunteers Are Stars” luncheon to recognize and praise the dedicated efforts of its many wonderful volunteers.  This event is generously sponsored by the Assistance League of Inland North County.

Annually, Library volunteers provide over 24,200 hours of service, and volunteers at the Park Avenue Community Center provide 10,240 hours. Combined, the City benefits by more than 34,440 hours of service to the community, with an estimated department savings of over $723,240 in labor alone. We are grateful for the cost savings, and equally appreciative to have so many caring and engaged community members who contribute throughout the year.
