Economic Development Week

Happy Economic Development Week from the City of Escondido! Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council in 2016 to increase awareness of local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and improve the quality of life in communities everywhere.

Our economic development department is committed to creating an environment that supports key industries, fosters innovation, and creates job opportunities for our community. But we don't just focus on bringing in new business, we also provide support and resources to help existing businesses thrive and grow. From small startups to established companies, we're here to help fuel economic prosperity for Escondido.

Volunteers Plant Trees in Downtown

Last Saturday, the City of Escondido Public Works Department hosted a volunteer event to plant trees around Grand Avenue. Nearly 40 volunteers came out to plant trees and improve the condition of the planters in Parking Lot #1. Pictured is Lead Maintenance Technician and ISA Certified Arborist Jacob Gibbs, performing a demonstration on correctly planting a tree and giving it the best chance to thrive. Thank you to the community members who participated in keeping our City healthy and beautiful!

Economic Development Projects

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS): Every five years, the City of Escondido Economic Development team updates the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). The CEDS is a document that uses data and community feedback to create policy and activity priorities for a five-year timeframe.

Why It Matters: The CEDS is a way to set a plan to attract and retain high-wage and critical businesses. Businesses play an important role in our community, providing jobs, goods and services to our residents. Many businesses also provide sales tax revenue, and serve as a catalyst to attract investment into the City to fund infrastructure improvements.

This document serves as a way to unite the City with private sector, nonprofit and other government entities on the economic development priorities of the City that will create a healthy economy. One in which people can find the jobs they want to grow their careers, and that provides the financial backbone of the community.

Your participation is important

In this process, in addition to analyzing the data and learning from economic trends, and historical policies, the City wants to hear feedback from business leaders, employees and residents, in what policies and activities would help attract and keep desirable business in Escondido.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

Fraudulent Apartment Rentals

Last week, officers were alerted to a possible scam. The suspect was creating false "apartment for rent" advertisements online and placing them on corkboards in laundromats. Officers found at least five families that were victims of the scam and detectives are continuing the investigation. Scams are everywhere, and this is a good reminder to never give cash or online payments to someone without seeing an apartment or merchandise first.

Drunk Drivers

This weekend, officers were dealing with a traffic collision in the city. While trying to keep the street closed for investigation, two separate drunk drivers drove into the area. Both of the impaired drivers were safely stopped by the officers and arrested.
