Historic Preservation Resources

Escondido Historic Survey – completed in 1990 and updated in 2001 – identifies properties 50 years or older at the time of the survey. These historic survey books are inside City Hall and available for viewing at the Planning Counter.

Escondido Local Register of Historic Resources – historically significant properties included in the historic survey. Local Register listing is voluntary.

Article 40: Historical Resources – zoning code section dealing with historic properties throughout the city. 

Article 65: Old Escondido Neighborhood – zoning code section that applies to all properties within the Old Escondido Historic District.

Design Guidelines for Homeowners of Historic Resources – provides design criteria applicable to all local register structures located through the city and all structures, new and existing, in the Old Escondido Neighborhood.

"How to Research Your Historic Escondido Home" brochure published by the Escondido History Center – provides guidance for conducting property research.

Historic Incentives – permit waivers up to $300 for eligible properties.

Mills Act Program – property tax reduction program for residential properties on the City's Local Register. For more information see planning division handout, "Mills Act Program"
