Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library invites the community to attend two space-themed events for adults and families this August: The Great American Eclipse 2017, on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 and Palomar Telescope: Bridge to the Stars on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. Both events run from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in the Turrentine Room on the second floor of the Library.

On August 21, 2017, the continental United States will experience a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1979. Astronomy hobbyists and expert photographers Les and Mary Anderson, have been photographing eclipses for more than 38 years. They will present The Great American Eclipse 2017, on Tuesday, August 1 at 6:00 p.m. to explain how to safely view and photograph the event. Mr. Anderson is the President of the Southern California Association of Camera Clubs, which oversees the Photographic Arts Building in Balboa Park, and Mrs. Anderson is the Vice President of Programs.

In 1921 no one knew about galaxies, quasars, or nebulae. Twenty years and $6 million later, one man’s dream to build the world’s largest telescope was realized - the 200” Hale Telescope on Palomar Mountain. On Tuesday, August 22 at 6:00 p.m., author and lecturer Mark Carlson will share the history of the Hale Telescope and how it continues to influence our understanding of deep space today during Palomar Telescope: Bridge to the Stars.

Library programs are free and open to the public. Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street in downtown Escondido.
