In Aster’s community, everyone is born to practice a certain kind of magic: boys learn to shapeshift and girls master “witchery,” or spells and potions. Aster feels his true talents lie in witchery and not shapeshifting, but everyone tells him he must conform according to an ancient code created for the good of all. When one of the boys mysteriously disappears, Aster will have to decide whether to follow the rules or use a bit of magic, even if it means risking frightening consequences.
