Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s Read, Eat, and Discuss (R.E.A.D.) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12 years old, kicks off this fall with a discussion of Raina Telgemeier’s Sisters, the highly anticipated companion novel to Smile. The Book Club meets Friday, September 26, 2014 in the Library’s Turrentine Room from 3:30-4:30 PM. A limited number of copies of the book are available for checkout at the Children’s Desk.
In the autobiographical Sisters, Telgemeier adroitly covers sensitive territory – her tense, but also tender relationship with her sister, Amara. Raina dreams of being a big sister, but when Amara is born, things don’t turn out the way she hoped. Amara is an adorable baby, but she can also be grouchy and shows little interest in playing with her big sister. As the years go on, the sisters’ relationship doesn’t significantly improve. Telgemeier focuses the novel on the drama that unfolds between the sisters during a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado. This endearing installment will thrill devoted Telgemeier readers, and gain new fans.
Youth Services Librarian Lalitha Nataraj leads the R.E.A.D Book Club and noted, “Our spring discussion of Smile was enthusiastic. ‘Tweens shared personal insights, sparking conversation about the joyful, but often difficult experience of becoming a teenager. I expect Sisters will receive a similarly passionate reception.”
The next R.E.A.D. Middle Grade Book Club meeting will be on Friday, November 7, 2014, from 3:30-4:30 PM in the Turrentine Room, where readers will discuss The Secrets of the Book with special guest author, Erin Fry. Ms. Fry will answer questions about her book and share details about her writing process.
