Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library invites readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This month’s title is the classic Washington Square by Henry James.

One of the most instantly appealing of James's early masterpieces, Washington Square is the tale of a trapped daughter and a domineering father. Catherine Sloper, heiress to a fortune, attracts the attention of a good-looking but penniless young man, Morris Townsend. Her father is convinced that his motives are merely mercenary and he will not consent to the marriage, regardless of the cost to his daughter. Out of this classic confrontation, Henry James fashioned a tale with great depth of meaning and an understanding of the human condition. First published in 1880, but set some forty years earlier in a pre-Civil War New York, this novel reflects the restricted world in which its heroine is marooned.

The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue on June 9, 2015, with a discussion on Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.  The selection for July 14, 2015, Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall by Kazuo Ishiguro, is in keeping with this year’s Summer Reading theme, Read to the Rhythm. Join Escondido Public Library’s Summer Reading Club and take part in the California Library Association’s goal of signing up 1 Million Summer Readers this year. In addition, Escondido Public Library’s Summer Reading program includes special events such as 2nd Saturday Concerts and the Be Money Smart series, as well as a chance to earn weekly prizes.
