Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s Read, Eat, and Discuss (R.E.A.D.) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12, meets on Friday, May 29, 2015, in the Turrentine Room from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Natalie Lloyd’s A Snicker of Magic will be discussed, followed by a craft activity related to the book. Beginning May 1, 2015, a limited number of copies of A Snicker of Magic will be available for checkout at the Children’s Desk.

12-year-old Felicity Pickle has spent her life flitting from place to place with her nomadic mother, a woman cursed with a wandering heart. When they arrive in the town where Mama grew up, the tween feels right at home. Midnight Gulch once had magic coursing through its streets, a quirky place where people conjured up thunderstorms through song. Felicity also possesses a bit of her own magic—she’s a word collector who sees words shimmering and sparkling all around her.

With the help of the local townspeople, including Jonah, a mysterious, spikey-haired do-gooder, Felicity determines to bring magic back to Midnight Gulch. Fans of Ingrid Law’s Savvy and Louis Sachar’s Holes will treasure A Snicker of Magic, which is filled to the brim with folklore and legends, family secrets, and lots of heart.

Librarian Lalitha Nataraj said, “It’s been very gratifying to see young readers so captivated by the R.E.A.D. selections. Most importantly, R.E.A.D. fosters a social connection and friendships develop among the participating children.”

Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street in Escondido. Library programs are free and open to the public and generously sponsored by Friends of the Escondido Public Library.
