Escondido Team Heads to Championships

The Escondido Werewolves have qualified for the Division 1 National Championships in Florida, nicknamed the "Super Bowl of Pop Warner football". The team heads to Orlando, Florida this Friday, December 3. Learn more about them in the 10News story here . Good luck Werewolves!

 

Holiday Northern Lights

Northern Lights is back at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido until January 3. The 12-acre campus has transformed into a spectacle of light, hope, and joy after sunset each evening. After sunset the young and young-at-heart will enjoy tunnels of twinkling lights, LED Christmas trees, light shows, and Platform 9¾ - themed light extravaganza at the historical train depot.

In conjunction with Northern Lights is the 8th Annual Winter Wonderland. On December 4, 11, and 18, from 3 - 8 p.m., come play in real snow, enjoy holiday-themed drinks and treats at Santa's Corner Cafe, holiday crafting activities led by professional teaching artists and browse for gifts from local artisans. These are FREE events.

Escondido High Hosting Winter Wonderland

The Escondido High School's agriculture program presents the second annual Winter Wonderland this Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Escondido High School farm. Attendees can meet Santa, visit the petting zoo, and enjoy story time with elves, in addition to picking up pre-ordered holiday goods. Preorder tamales, Dudley's Bread, Julian Pies, poinsettias, and wreaths to support agriculture program students at https://form.jotform.com/213125031935143 . The option to drive in is also available. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned foods for donation to Interfaith.

Anonymous Report

cid:image004.jpg@01D7E000.696FDEC0 On November 22, patrol responded to an anonymous report of a man living in a tent and allegedly selling drugs and was in possession of firearms. After servicing a warrant, officers discovered the following items: meth, ecstasy, fentanyl, heroin, hydrocodone pills, two functioning firearms, one non-operational firearm, two BB guns, and approximately $2,600 in U.S. Currency.

Thanksgiving Quarrel

On November 25, a reporting party called to request police assistance for two drunk family members physically fighting on the day of Thanksgiving. Police arrived and arrested the males for drunk in public. The subjects physically resisted by verbally threatening and physically assaulting the uniformed officers. Both subjects were booked for violation of PC 69 (Crimes by and against the Executive Power of the State).

Byler Memorial

Former Marine and police officer with the Escondido Police Department, Brett Byler, passed away on November 14 after a brave and valiant fight with a glioblastoma. After serving in the Marine Corps, Brett became a police officer and served with the Department of Defense, the San Diego Police Department, and most recently with the Escondido Police Department.

On February 16, 2020, Brett Byler was found to have a large 5.5 cm brain tumor, which had grown and crossed the mid line of his brain. He underwent surgery on February 20, 2020 to remove the majority of the tumor. He fought courageously though numerous treatments all while spending as much time as he possibly could with his family and loved ones. Brett is survived by his wife, Mariah, and their three young daughters Brynlee, Barrett, and Bellamy .

Officer Byler's funeral on November 23 included a hundred plus car procession to the Church.

 

Police Athletic League (PAL) Football Camp

On November 27, PAL hosted a co-ed football camp at Washington Park. Several officers attended including Officer Brandon Byler, Brett Byler's older brother. Many Byler family members attended the camp, including Brett Byler's daughters. Barrett, Brett's middle daughter, won an autographed football at the end of the day.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

 

On November 16, the Fire Department responded to and extinguished an encampment fire located approximately 20-25 feet inside one of the storm drains of the flood control channel at the Midway Drive intersection.

On November 19, the Fire Department responded to an outdoor fire located at 1002 W. Mission Ave. Upon arrival, firefighters extinguished an encampment fire that was located between a vacant building and the right of way for east bound Highway 78.

On November 20, multiple Escondido fire companies attended confined space training in San Marcos along with other north zone agencies. The training simulated a person injured and trapped deep in a storm drain.

Also, on November 20, crews from Fire Station # 1 attended the "Day of Service" event at Kit Carson Park. Firefighters demonstrated the aerial ladder capabilities for approximately fifty attendees.

On November 20, the Fire Department responded to the 500 block of W. 5 th Ave for a broken water main. Firefighters were able to divert the water away from structures to prevent any significant damage.

Dry and windy conditions existed throughout the region during the week of Thanksgiving causing firefighters to be on high alert. Fortunately, there were no significant fire related incidents in the region and there was no public safety power shut off by SDG&E in Escondido.

Permits and Inspections:

Building Division:

  1. The counter staff conducted in-person meetings with 61 applicants, processed 63 applications, and issued 31 permits.
  2. The total permit valuation for the week was $3,773,677.
  3. Building inspectors completed 133 inspections.

Field Engineering Division:

1. Field Engineering processed 16 permits.

2. Filed Engineering inspectors completed 130 inspections.
