It was previously reported that parents helping their children fish at the Escondido Hidden Valley Kiwanis Kiddie Pond would be required to purchase a daily fishing permit. This information is incorrect. Parents not fishing or participating in the Trout Derby are not required to purchase a daily permit while their children fish at the Kiddie Pond.
The 36th Annual Lake Dixon Trout Derby will begin on Friday, December 5, 2014 and run through Sunday, December 7, 2014. Large trout and great fishing have been the hallmark of this annual event. The Grand Prize winning Rainbow Trout at 19 of the past 25 derbies weighed in over 8 pounds. To enter, each angler must purchase a daily permit normally required to fish the lake ($7.00 adults, $5.00 for kids under 16 and seniors over 60). There is no additional charge to enter the derby, but the $5 vehicle entry fee into the park will be charged each day of the derby. Since Lake Dixon now has an Aquaculture permit, a California Fishing License is no longer required. Fish must be weighed in during derby hours, 6:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., on the day they are caught. Since contestants can win only one prize, chances of winning are good. To make this three day event competitive for the novice as well as the skilled angler, there are a variety of ways to win. Prizes will be awarded for the following five categories: the largest trout of the derby, the largest in each age category (senior, adult, and youth), the first and second largest trout of each day, the smallest trout of the derby, and for the first 15 trout brought in that have a plastic clip on their dorsal fin. In the event of a tie, the winning fish will be determined by the first fish weighed in.
