POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:
Vehicle Burglary
On August 17, residents called police to report a man stealing items inside a parked vehicle. He was contacted and arrested for being under the influence of drugs. Officers contacted the owner of the vehicle and learned the owner left it there due to lack of gas and no money to fill his tank. The officers picked him up at his home, filled his car with gas and sent him on his way.
Shop with a Cop
Every year, San Diego County conducts the Shop with a Cop event. School children are selected from a variety of agencies (city police, county sheriffs, probation, federal agencies, etc.) and are paired up with an officer. They are then treated to a morning at Sea World and a shopping trip at Target. The event always occurs around the holiday season. This year, Escondido Police Department is proud to host the event. Numerous fund-raising campaigns have already started to make sure these kids have an amazing experience and day. On August 20, the police department competed in an indoor soccer tournament as part of one of the fundraisers.
Congratulations
On August 16, the Escondido Police Department had four recruits graduate from the 130th San Diego Regional Police Academy. Congratulations to our newest officers who started orientation and will head in to field training.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:
On August 16, the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received multiple reports of a home on fire in the area of West 11th Avenue and South Orange Street. Callers also reported that there was possibly two people still inside the home.
While en route to the fire, the Engine Captain from Station #5 (Felicita) reported smoke showing from a distance. When on scene, the Captain reported that the home was fully involved with smoke and fire venting from the windows. Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire while searching for anyone in the home. Although hampered by a large accumulation of belongings in the home, firefighters were able to locate and remove a female victim who was transported in critical condition to Palomar Medical Center. A short time later, a male victim was located and removed from the home. Despite lifesaving efforts and rapid transportation to the hospital, the male victim, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.
Forty-two firefighters responded to the fire, including assistance from Ranch Santa Fe Fire and San Marcos Fire. Escondido Police also assisted by securing the area and closing streets. Fortunately, there were no injuries to first responders.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Escondido Police Detectives assisted by Escondido Fire investigators.
On August 17, the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received reports from neighbors that a home on Firestone Drive was on fire. Neighbors also reported that the resident was not in the house. When the first fire engine arrived, light smoke was visible, however, the fire quickly spread from the kitchen into the attic and then throughout the house.
Incident command was established, and a working fire upgrade and second alarm were requested. Firefighters contained the fire in approximately 14 minutes, preventing damage to the neighboring houses and limiting damage to the involved structure. Significant overhaul work was required to ensure the fire was completely extinguished in the attic and roofing material.
The lone resident at the home was treated at scene and transported to the hospital as a precaution with minor smoke inhalation. There were no injuries to firefighters. In all, twenty-seven firefighters and one fire prevention specialist responded to the fire. Escondido Police provided secured the scene and provided traffic control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
On August 21, five Escondido firefighters returned home safely from their 14-day deployment as part of a Brush Patrol strike team at the Lightning Complex Fire in Six Rivers National Forest near Eureka.
