Small Business Grants

In 2021, Escondido City Council authorized two grant programs: A facade improvement program aimed at addressing ongoing concerns with the physical appearance of the downtown and commercial areas and a CPTED program aimed at addressing the impacts of homeless encampments and civic disorder.

These grants are funded using Federal money allocated to the City of Escondido through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021. The City Council established these programs to provide matching grants to business and property owners that wish to renovate, enhance, and improve highly visible buildings along core commercial corridors throughout the City. The City recognizes that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic many businesses have suffered financially and struggled to keep up with or improve their facades. These funds are a way to address some of these challenges and restore vibrancy and further preservation to our community.

A hit on Broadway, A Year with Frog and Toad was nominated for three Tony Awards including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and featuring a hummable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great friends the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons.

Waking from hibernation in the Spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Part vaudeville, part make believe all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout the seasons.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

IMG_5858.jpgPAL Basketball

On August 8, the Escondido Police Athletic League hosted its 11th Annual Teens vs. Police basketball game at the East Valley Community Center. The teenage PAL players took on the police officers (and some of their friends) in a very close game.

Al Owens brought the PAL game back after a three-year break. He did an amazing job and raised $9,000 to assist the family of nine-year-old Joshua Whitten. Joshua is a PAL player and was diagnosed with rare form of brain cancer. Acting Chief Cramer swore Joshua in as an honorary police officer before the start of the game.

It was a great day for the police, the players, Joshua, his family and the entire Escondido community. A huge thank you to everyone who helped with the event and a special thanks to Al Owens for all that he does for the community.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

On August 7, Escondido Fire deployed our OES Brush Patrol from Station #2 with firefighters as part of a strike team with crews from Encinitas, Oceanside and San Bernardino County to the Six Rivers Lightning Fire Complex in Humboldt and Trinity Counties. Battalion Chief Sargis and Captain Beverly were also deployed as the strike team leaders. After a two-day drive to get to the fires, the strike team has been used to support multiple firing operations designed to burn out fuel between control lines and the fire. The strike team is expected to be deployed for 14-16 days.

On August 10, the Escondido Police and Fire Departments responded to a single vehicle traffic collision on Bear Valley Parkway involving a pest control vehicle. The accident caused a spill of a large quantity of rat poison. Firefighters consulted with San Diego County Hazmat and cleaned up/disposed of the product safety.

On August 11, the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of an outdoor fire in the area of Jesmond Dene Park. The first Engine Captain located several small vegetation fires in the northwest corner of the park. The fires were quickly extinguished and the cause of the fires is under investigation.

On August 13, the crew of Escondido firefighters that were deployed to the McKinney Fire in Siskiyou County returned home safely after an 11-day assignment with a strike team of OES brush engines from north county.
