The Grand Woofstock!

Join us for North County's Premier Pet Expo titled “The GRAND WoofStock”  which will be held in downtown Escondido on September 29, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This FREE canine-friendly event features vendor booths offering unique dog related merchandise, flyball and agility demos. The Escondido Police Department will have a K-9 unit on display. There also will be an "Ask a Vet" booth staffed by local veterinarians and an "Ask the Trainer" booth to get some advice on training your four-legged friends.

Participating Grand Avenue restaurants are planning specials and yappy hours and many of our restaurants are dog-friendly, sitting on an outside dining patio listening to live music while sipping on a chilled glass of wine or beer is just one of the many enjoyments to be had at WoofStock.

Face painting for kids, pictures of your pooch at our famous Dog Beach and local shops will be rolling out the red carpet with discounts and specials and they will be passing out dog treats too.

This Pet Expo will benefit the Escondido Humane Society who will be on-site showing adoptable pets, as well as representation from several local pet rescues. Don’t forget to bring your furry friend too!   For more information please visit  www.escondidoevents.net

Town Hall Meeting September 19

Town Hall meetings are a good way to give residents an opportunity to express their opinions and discuss their concerns in a less formal environment than regular council meetings. In fulfillment of one of my campaign promises, I have held three Town Hall meetings since 2011. My next town hall meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 201 N. Broadway.  The meeting format will be an open question and answer period on any topic relating to local government.  This is your opportunity to share your views on the issues facing our City Council and to discuss any subject that matters to you or your business. We will follow up with the appropriate City department to resolve any issues. The meeting will also be videotaped and rebroadcast the following Sunday and Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. on Cox. Ch.19 and AT&T U-Verse Ch. 99.

I encourage you to attend and participate in the discussion, or even just say hello and introduce yourself.  Working together we can help Escondido become a better city.

Grand Opening of Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza

The City of Escondido will hold a grand opening celebration of the Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza on Friday, September 7, 2012.  A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Plaza, located on Maple Street between Grand Avenue and Valley Parkway. There also will be musical entertainment by the Platte River Band, as well as the crowning of Dick and Anne Lievers as the King and Queen of the Grape Day Festival which will be held the next day, September 8 at Grape Day Park.

The Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza offers a destination for people of all ages to sit and relax, visit local businesses or engage with members of the community in a vibrant public space.  The street has been constructed as a “festival street”, with a single, one-way lane from south to north, with no curbs or on-street parking.  Through the use of removable bollards, the street can be closed to car traffic for special events making the block a people place.  The project also features decorative paving, distinctive landscaping and artwork, dramatic LED lighting, interactive water feature, and two large gateway structures at each end of the project. The Maple Street Plaza will also provide a pedestrian-friendly connection between Grand Avenue and  City Hall, the California Center for the Arts Escondido, and Grape Day Park

Come join us at this exciting community celebration as we turn a street for cars into a street for people.

Escondido Peace March

On Saturday, August 25, 2012, the Escondido Police Department joins Victory Outreach Church, Resurrection Church, other local churches and community members and residents in a Peace March that will be held in Escondido.

The Peace March is intended to send the message that Escondido is a great city and our community is united! The march will also highlight the fact Escondido community members work together to reduce violence, improve neighborhoods and collectively create an even safer Escondido for our children.

The Peace March is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Victory Outreach Church located at 1131 East Washington Avenue in Escondido and conclude at Resurrection Church located at 1445 Conway Drive. Resurrection Church will be hosting their annual festival at the same location. Police Department Traffic Officers will escort marchers along the entire march route North on Ash Street to El Norte Parkway and then East to Conway Drive. Transportation will be provided at Resurrection Church to take marchers back to the Victory Outreach parking lot.

Event T-shirts will be available for $10 the day of the march at Victory Outreach where the march begins. However, if you don’t want to buy a T-shirt, we ask that you wear a white shirt to show your support.
