Annual State of the City Address

I will be offering my Annual State of the City address on Wednesday morning, February 20, 2013 at the Conference Center of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

The event is co-sponsored by the Escondido Chamber of Commerce and will begin with an optional breakfast at 7:45 a.m. followed by the program at 8:30 a.m.  The program will include awards to outstanding community volunteers as well as brief remarks by my colleagues on the City Council and conclude with my address.  Financial expert, George Chamberlin will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

City Hall to be Open Monday through Friday Again

Beginning Tuesday, January 22, 2013 Escondido City Hall operating hours will be restored to full time and will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

We are very pleased to provide full time city services again to the general public.  The additional cost of the full schedule will be covered under the balanced budget policy approved by the City Council in 2011.  With the improved economic activities in Escondido, it is important that we provide the residents, businesses and visitors with the highest level of service they expect from our city.

Escondido City Hall has been closed every Friday since January 2009 as a cost savings measure resulting from the recession. Prior to that, City Hall was closed on every other Friday since 1993 when a 9/80 work schedule was implemented. 

 

You Can Serve Your City

The Escondido City Council is preparing to begin its annual recruitment for volunteers to serve on the City’s boards and commissions.  In 2013, vacancies will only occur on the Library Board of Trustees.  The Library Board requires either residency or that you work within the geographic boundaries of the General Plan.  The Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm.

It should be noted that applications for all Boards and Commissions are accepted throughout the year and will be considered should a vacancy occur.  The Historic Preservation Commission requires a resume to assure that you have specific expertise.   The Planning Commission may require evidence of certification for design professional classification, and the Public Art Commission requires that you either reside or have a business within the designated boundaries. 

Meeting times and frequency vary, depending on the commission, and the term of office is four years, with the exception of the Library Board, which has a three-year term.   The filing period for those interested in submitting an application for the Library Board of Trustees will close on Friday, February 15, 2013.

Escondido Chosen as Overall Start for Prestigious Bike Race

America’s premier cycling event, the Amgen Tour of California, is a Tour de France-style cycling road race presented by AEG that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course. Escondido was fortunate to host the finish of the 2009 Tour and it was a highlight in our city’s history. Tens of thousands of people enjoyed watching the race along the route and finish line in our downtown business district, wilding cheering on the cyclists. The enthusiastic reception the cyclists received from the community was extraordinary and created a lot of favorable media commentary and coverage.  So it is with great pleasure that we welcomed the news that Escondido has been selected to serve as the Overall Start of  the eight-day race that will begin on May 12, 2013.
