Escondido Planning 125th Anniversary!

October 8, 2013 marks Escondido’s 125th anniversary as an incorporated city.  A free community event commemorating the city’s quasquicentennial will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 1 – 4 p.m. in Grape Day Park near the Escondido History Center. The event will include family-friendly games and activities, historic photo displays, special presentations and more. We are proud of our history, and proud of what we are today – a great city with small town charm. I look forward to sharing this festive occasion with our community.

Event partners include the City of Escondido, Escondido History Center, Escondido Chamber of Commerce, Escondido Downtown Business Association, Visit Escondido and the California Center for the Arts.

Feather Flags No Longer Allowed in Escondido

Last summer the Escondido City Council began a one-year pilot program with provisions to allow businesses to use advertising feather flags and temporary portable signs.  At the end of the trial period the City Council would review the impact of the program and decide whether or not to continue to allow them.  Unfortunately, some street corners became inundated with feather signs  which created a cluttered circus-like look to the community.  This was counter-productive to the Council’s efforts to improve the Escondido’s appearance.  As a result, the City Council voted not to extend the sign provisions, which expired June 22, 2013.

The City is providing a courtesy “grace period” within which business owners must discontinue the use of these temporary/portable signs.

All feather flags and temporary portable signs must be removed from display by SEPTEMBER 1, 2013, except those flags/signs displaying a special event sign permit sticker.

If you have any questions about this issue, please call Code Enforcement at (760) 839-4650.

Independent Districting Commission

You may recall that Escondido will be divided into four voting districts. The districts will be determined by a Districting Commission consisting of 7 members.  The members will be chosen by a Selection Panel of retired San Diego County judges.

The Escondido City Clerk’s Office received 31 applications/nominations for the Independent Districting Commission during the specified nomination period of June 3 – 28, 2013.  The applications have been posted to the City’s website at

The Selection Panel has determined that they will hold a Public Meeting on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the City Council Chambers to provide an opportunity for each applicant/nominee to make a brief presentation to the Panel.  It is anticipated that the Selection Panel may appoint the seven members to the Independent Districting Commission at the close of the meeting.  The agenda for this public meeting will be posted on the City’s website no later than 72 hours before the meeting.

If you have any questions, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 760-839-4617.
