The Escondido Recreation Division is starting its busy summer aquatics season with opportunities to make families safe in and around the water. The month of June marks the start of Learn to Swim Lessons, Summer Swim League, Riptides Water Polo, and Open Swim. All of these exciting activities are held at both James A. Stone and Washington Park pools from June until mid-August. Escondido Recreation Aquatics encourages people of all ages to practice their swimming techniques, beat the heat, spend time with their families, and have fun at Escondido pools.

More information about the aquatics programs can be found in the Summer Recreation Guide, at or by calling 760-839-4691.

In an effort to provide the best service possible for our residents and streamline the permitting process, the Building Department is pleased to offer owners and contractors an expedited process for residential roof top solar permits.

In compliance with the Solar Rights Act and Assembly Bill 2188, roof top residential solar projects may now receive expedited permitting. This expedited process will encourage timely and cost-effective installations of solar energy systems, will promote the use of solar systems and will limit obstacles to their use. The expedited permitting process will streamline permitting for small residential roof top energy systems which comply with a developed checklist, Information Guideline 24A and 24B. These Guidelines are now available on the city’s web site at  and at the Building Department counter at City Hall. Qualifying solar systems will receive their permits over the counter.

Do You Have Plans For Memorial Day Weekend?

Over the years the original meaning and spirit of Memorial Day has faded from the public consciousness. Originally known as “Decoration Day”, Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  You can honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom by attending a Memorial Day Remembrance Service at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Road, on Monday, May 25, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. The remembrance is sponsored by the Escondido Allied Veterans Council.

In addition to this solemn observance of Memorial Day, you may also want to consider another event that has become a Memorial Day Weekend tradition in Escondido: the American Heritage Car Show sponsored by the Escondido History Center.  This year’s free event will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. in Grape Day Park in downtown Escondido. The American Heritage Car Show will feature hundreds of domestic and import pre-'74 vintage, classic, muscle and hot rod cars. The event will include a DJ, vendors, refreshments, and a raffle.
