Update on Cocos Fire

Escondido is now a part of  the Unified Command for the Cocos fire.  The Incident Command Post for the Cocos Fire is still at Cal State San Marcos. The establishment of Cal Fire’s base camp at Kit Carson Park is progressing well.


At this point it has been confirmed that one home and two outbuildings on Mount Whitney Drive in the unincorporated area of the County were destroyed.  No homes have been lost within the city limits.


Schools in Escondido will be closed again on Friday, May 16, 2014.


The Evacuation Center at Escondido High  approximately 160 evacuees there as well as many small and large animals.


Escondido Police Department continues to  maintain security at the evacuation center and in evacuated areas.



Palomar Medical Center ER

Although the emergency rooms at both Palomar Medical Center (PMC)  and its downtown campus are open, patients with non-life threatening medical emergencies are asked to go to the emergency room at Palomar Health  Downtown Campus until the threat of fire at PMC is gone.

Update on Evac/Pets, Large and Small at Escondido HS

The Evacuation Center at Escondido High School is accepting large animals such as llamas, horses, goats, etc. as well as chickens, dogs, cats and other small animals.  If possible, please bring your own leashes, cages, and food bowls to help your animal feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar environment.

Road Closure updates: 78 EB and Del Dios Hwy

CHP and Caltrans have closed EB 78 to San Marcos Blvd., Twin Oaks Valley Rd., Barham and Nordahl.

CHP and Caltrans are advising that they are closing Del Dios Hwy. from Via Rancho Parkway to Rancho Dr. just west of Escondido so that nearby evacuees can escape.

No Arrest Made in Connection with Fire

There have been reports that the Escondido Police Department arrested  a suspect in connection with the fires.  This report is incorrect.  A suspect was detained but it was determined there was no connection between him and the fire.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Escondido residents living west of West Valley Parkway between Via Rancho Parkway and Highway 78.  Residents are directed to evacuation centers at either Escondido High School, 1535 N. Broadway in Escondido or Mission Hills High School, at 1 Mission Hills Court in San Marcos.   Residents are being notified by Reverse 9-1-1 calls.


Palomar Medical Center West will shelter in place.
