STOREKEEPER/RECEIVING CLERK

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical and technical duties in City Stores, such as receives, stores, and issues of a variety of supplies, materials and equipment; maintains records of items received and issued; delivers inventory to various City locations on a weekly basis; performs related duties as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for positions in this classification. A single position in a multi-position classification may not perform all of these duties and/or may perform similar related duties not listed here:

  • Utilizes an on-line inventory system on a daily basis; fills supply orders of stocked items to counter customers; maintains a variety of inventory and warehouse records.
  • Receives and accepts delivery of supplies, tools, materials, and equipment; inspects items received for damage.
  • Verifies items received and quantity between buy cards and packing slips; maintains records of all warehouse stock received.
  • Places items received in proper storage areas and rotates stock; stores items in accordance with established storage system.
  • Monitors and audits inventory levels of stock items on a daily basis and notifies the Purchasing/Inventory Control Coordinator when quantities are low.
  • Processes, fills and delivers online/offsite customer orders on a weekly basis; picks up, stores and/or disposes of surplus property as directed by the Buyer/Stores Supervisor.
  • Operates standard office equipment including a personal computer, fax machine, copier, printer, and adding machine; operates a delivery box truck and packs and unloads inventory from delivery box truck according to delivery schedules; operates forklift, pallet jack, and  other light motor equipment in order to pick up, deliver or move warehouse stock.
  • Maintains warehouse in a clean and orderly condition on a weekly basis; assists with the annual physical inventory of warehouse stock.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Warehouse operations and methods.
  • Shipping and receiving practices, procedures and terminology.
  • Safety principles and practices.
  • Methods and techniques of effective customer service.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Mathematical principles.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Maintain accurate storekeeping records, files, indexes and inventories.
  • Follow established clerical procedures and learn/follow the specific operations of the warehouse.
  • Follow established safety practices.
  • Work under pressure with frequent interruptions.
  • Perform simple arithmetic computations quickly and accurately.
  • Understand and apply pertinent laws, codes, and regulations as well as organization and unit rules, policies, and procedures with good judgment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and efficient warehouse.
  • Type and enter data at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Operate office equipment including a personal computer, fax machine, copier, printer, and adding machine.
  • Learn required software programs utilized in inventory management and control.
  • Physically and safely lift 95 lbs.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with outside vendors, as well as City workforce and immediate co-workers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and contribute to a successful team effort.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Plan and organize work load to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Be self-motivated, dependable, and results-oriented.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience: Materials handling or systemized storekeeping experience is desirable.

License or Certificate: Possess a valid California driver's license. Certification to operate gas and electric forklift is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: CONSTANT exposure to extreme heat and cold of open warehouse; exposure to fumes and odors of gasoline, solvents and cleaning compounds; humidity and dust; toxic substances of solvents and chemicals; temperature swings from office to warehouse and outdoors; mechanical hazards of forklift and chop saw; FREQUENT chemical hazards of batteries, cleaning compounds, flares and solvents.  Work hours are 80-hour pay periods with scheduled breaks and lunch period.  Overtime may be required infrequently due to workload.  Work setting is informal, both team and autonomy oriented, having both routine and variable tasks in a sometimes fast-paced and pressured environment.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors, on the ground and in high, exposed areas.

Physical: CONTINUOUS lifting of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; sitting, walking; standing; bending and stooping; squatting; climbing; kneeling; balancing; crouching; reaching at and above shoulder height; pushing/pulling; twisting at waist; upward and downward flexion of neck; side-to-side turning of neck.  FREQUENT lifting/handling of objects weighing up to 75 lbs; OCCASIONAL lifting/handling of objects weighing up to 95 lbs.; fine finger dexterity and light to moderate finger pressure to manipulate a computer keyboard and adding machine; grasp to hold/carry boxes and operate forklift; pinch/grasp to file and manipulate writing instruments.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction to perform visual inspections; clerical duties; and receiving, inspecting and storing of items. Vision sufficient to operate equipment; read computer screens, orders, inventory records, receipts, reports and other printed documents.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
