Fire Stations Project - Station 1


Current Status as of July 2008

  • Hose tower foundation poured and ready for block work to start. The block contractor just went out of business. Jaynes Corporation is trying to secure another block contractor.
  • Forms, beam excavation, plumbing, and electrical rough-in are in process for the main fire station. Grade beams poured on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at southside main fire station foundation and northside main slab poured last week. Four sets of cylinders pulled by special inspector.
  • Lumber was delivered last week, and the framing contractor started laying out and framing the first floor northside office area.
  • All site underground sewer installed.
  • Masonry block at roof prop building 8’ feet high. Special inspector Xenia Miranda providing full-time masonry inspection.
  • Electrician roughed-in conduit packages to main building.

Decisions Made on the Project

  • Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on March 6, 2008 – Ceremony Photos*
  • Demolition of Fire Station 1 Training Tower (video)
  • Awarded construction contract to Jaynes Corporation in the amount of $12,125,000.00 on December 5, 2007
  • Relocated Fire Station 1 operations to a temporary location at 905 West Washington Avenue
  • Awarded a contract in the amount of $116,500.00 to American Wrecking, Inc. of South El Monte for the demolition of Fire Station 1
  • Approved the Conditional Use Permit and Zone Change for the new Fire Station 1 on February 7, 2007
  • Received City Council approval to temporarily relocate Fire Station 1 personnel to the Public Works Yard during demolition and reconstruction of Fire Station 1
  • Reviewed preliminary design drawings
  • Selected Jeff Katz Architects to provide architectural services for the reconstruction of Fire Station 1

Project Location and Description

This project is located at 310 North Quince. It will include the demolition and removal of the existing Fire Station 1, reserve apparatus building, and training tower, as well as the reconstruction of a new 28,340 square foot facility, hose tower and classroom. The first floor will be approximately 21,640 square feet. The second floor will have 6,700 square feet of living quarter areas. It will accommodate 1 paramedic fire engine, 1 truck company, 2 ambulances and 1 battalion chief vehicle. This amounts to 19 persons per shift.

Project Budget

The total Prop P budget is $14.5 million, which includes design, construction, parking and furnishings.
