RECREATION TECHNICIAN I / II
Definition:
Under supervision, performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled duties related to parks and recreation landscape installation and maintenance; sports fields maintenance; and the maintenance and repair of parks and recreation facilities. A Recreation Technician I who successfully meets and completes the requirements for advancement may be promoted to Recreation Technician II.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares sports fields; applies line markings to ball fields;
- Plants, water, cultivates, fertilizes, rakes and cares for lawn and grounds using hand tools and light power equipment;
- Performs general custodial tasks in cleaning and maintaining park facilities;
- Performs wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, landscape, and maintenance work;
- Operates hand and portable power tools;
- Operates vehicles and equipment;
- Assists in installation and repair of lawn sprinkler systems, sports fields, field fencing, and facilities;
- Assists in maintaining the Recreation Division’s ball field maintenance program;
- Assists in keeping records and preparing reports of work performed;
- Performs general maintenance, cleaning and repairing of recreation facilities such as community centers, amphitheater, playgrounds, school-based program sites, and other municipal facilities;
- Assists recreation staff in the setup of facilities for comprehensive municipal recreation programs and activities;
- Assists with the operation of the public address system and stage lighting at the amphitheater;
- Reads and interprets directions and sketches.
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
May spray for pest and weed control.
Supervision:
Supervision is received from a Supervisor I, II, III or Recreation Technician III. Supervision may be exercised over Maintenance Aides and various part-time employees.

- Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.
Education and Experience - Recreation Technician I - Education equivalent to completion of 10th grade. Recreation Technician II - Education equivalent to completion of 10th grade, equivalent to at least twelve (12) months experience as a Recreation Technician I for the City of Escondido and successful completion of a training plan developed by the department.
License and Other Requirements - Must possess an unrestricted Class C California Commercial Driver’s License. Must be willing to work overtime, evenings and weekends as required.
Special Requirements - Incumbents must be able to work well with others; perform duties that require strenuous physical activity for prolonged periods.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS - In addition to Essential Functions required in each maintenance area, the following physical, environmental and communication demands are essential.
PHYSICAL: Positions in this class during a typical work shift are required to sit, stand and walk in the performance of their duties. Due to the physical nature of this position, the majority of tasks performed by incumbents involve a combination of two or more physical operations simultaneous requiring, but not limited to the following: Twisting neck and body, bending, pushing/pulling and standing. Lifting - Ability to grasp and lift tools and bags of concrete weighing up to 70 pounds and carry items over 100 feet in distance. Hearing - Ability to monitor sounds for traffic control, hear back-up alarms on trucks and other equipment, calls for help from co-workers and radio dispatched calls and/or signals. Vision - (may be correctable) that enables them to see work orders, repairs, construction, landscaping, mixing pesticides, dials and gauges and operate vehicles and equipment and monitor traffic control conditions. Verbal - Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with both the public and co-workers.
ENVIRONMENTAL: May be required to: work in inclement weather including sun, cold and rain; wear protective apparel, including goggles, face protectors, respirator noise insulator, apron and shoes; work on an overtime or call-back basis; and work around hazardous material and substances.
