REQUIREMENTS

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the officer:

  • Patrols a beat or sector.
  • Answers calls for assistance, including investigation of crimes, deaths, accidents and injuries.
  • Enforces laws and ordinances and makes arrests.
  • Protects life and property.
  • Performs the necessary related tasks to fulfill these objectives.

Standards

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for U.S. citizenship prior to application for employment.
  • Be a high school graduate or have passed the GED.
  • Be not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison.
  • Be fingerprinted and a search be made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Possess a valid California Class C (Class 3) driver's license at time of appointment.
  • Demonstrate fluent bilingual skills of Spanish/English (not mandatory, but highly desirable).
  • Be of good moral character as determined by a polygraph examination and a thorough background investigation.
  • Be in good physical condition and be able to successfully complete a physical agility test prior to appointment.
  • Successfully complete requirements of medical and psychological examinations.
  • Possess visual acuity corrected not to exceed 20/20 in each eye, with acceptable color vision.
  • Possess good communication skills, which include speaking, writing and reading ability.
  • Be hardworking, honest and trustworthy.
  • Work well in a fast-paced, often hectic environment.
  • Have a sense of humor and a real desire to help others.
