CERTIFIED BASIC ACADEMY WITHIN THE PAST THREE YEARS (CERTIFICATE OF GRADUATION MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATION) OR MUST BE CURRENTLY ATTENDING A CALIFORNIA P.O.S.T. CERTIFIED STANDARD LENGTH POLICE ACADEMY. IF ATTENDING AN EXTENDED FORMAT ACADEMY, APPLICANT MUST BE WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF GRADUATION BY DATE OF APPLICATION.

Minimum requirements:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.

Not have been convicted of a felony.

U.S. citizen, or qualify as a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's license at time of appointment, (A copy of applicant's driving record, obtainable at the DMV at applicant's expense, may be required at time of hire, as a condition of employment).

Bilingual English/Spanish highly desirable.
PER POST COMMISSION REGULATION 1008 (DOC), REQUALIFICATION OF REGULAR BASIC COURSE (RBC) TRAINING IS REQUIRED IF APPLICANT HAS NOT BEEN EMPLOYED IN A POSITION THAT REQUIRES THE RBC WITHIN THREE YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL COURSE COMPLETION, OR APPLICANT COMPLETES THE RBC, AND SUBSEQUENTLY HAS A THREE-YEAR-OR-LONGER BREAK IN SERVICE FROM A POSITION THAT REQUIRES THE RBC. TO REQUALIFY, APPLICANT MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE POST REQUALIFICATION COURSE. THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD WILL BE DETERMINED FROM LAST DATE OF EMPLOYMENT AS A CALIFORNIA POLICE OFFICER, OR FROM THE LAST ISSUANCE OF A BASIC COURSE WAIVER BY POST, WHICHEVER IS MOST RECENT.
NOTE: The City of Escondido is committed to a drug and alcohol free workplace. A medical examination, along with a DRUG SCREEN will be conducted following a conditional offer of employment.
Salary Range: $4,547 - $5,804 per month, commensurate with law enforcement experience; The City has an outstanding benefit package. Benefits may vary by bargaining unit, but all regular employees receive the following generous benefit package:

VISION AND HEARING REQUIREMENTS:
The hiring authority shall establish minimum standards for hearing, color vision, and visual acuity. The following is required by the City of Escondido:
Hearing
Candidates shall be required to pass a hearing test, which will consist of a whisper test for each ear. Candidates must be able to hear and repeat the whispered word(s) at a distance of not less than 15 feet, uncorrected.
Color Vision
Candidates shall be required to pass a color vision test, which will consist of an Ishihara color plates test. Candidates must properly identify twelve color plates in the series.
Visual Acuity
A police officer must possess visual acuity corrected not to exceed 20/20 in each eye. It is important that police officers possess good eyesight to be able to properly identify victims, suspects, and for their own safety and the safety of others during the course of their duty. Their eyesight shall not exceed 20/100 in each eye, uncorrected.
WAIVER: The hiring authority may waive visual acuity not to exceed 20/200, correctable to 20/20, based on the outstanding achievements and potential to the department, and provided an examination by an ophthalmologist reports the eyes are free from disease with no indication of an accelerated progression toward further decreased visual acuity.
Porta-Clinic Examination
The majority of a police officer's duty is driving at night. This examination determines glare recovery from lights, depth perception and reaction time—all-important in the safe operation of an automobile.
