Historic Preservation Commission


Purpose

The Historic Preservation Commission develops and implements the City Historic Preservation Program under the direction of the City Council, and advises the Council on the responsibilities of being a Certified Local Government and other matters relating to Historic Preservation. Areas of jurisdiction include:

  • Maintaining and updating the Escondido Historical Sites Survey

  • Recommending and maintaining a program of economic and other incentives

  • Reviewing and commenting on applications for development pertaining to historic resources

  • Conducting public information educational and interpretive programs pertaining to historic resources

Membership:

Seven members from the community who represent a variety of perspectives related to historic preservation including:

  • Professionals in the fields of American studies, anthropology, cultural geography, architecture or other historic preservation related disciplines (a majority should serve on the commission or to the extent these professionals are available in the community)
  • A member of the Escondido Historical Society (minimum of one)
  • Historians (a minimum of one)

Also considered desirable are:

  • Owners of historic structures
  • A representative from any formally approved Historic District

NOTE: A resume must be submitted with all applications.

Meeting Schedule: First Tuesday of every other month, 3:30 p.m.
Length of Term: Four years
Responsible Department: Planning Division, Community Development Department
Qualifications/Conditions: Must reside within the geographic boundaries of the General Plan
Compensation: None
Financial Disclosure: Must submit conflict of interest statements
Training: City staff provides an initial orientation and ethics training in accordance with state law.
