Escondido History Center

Escondido History CenterThe Escondido History Center office and Heritage Walk Museum Complex, featuring Escondido's first library, a Victorian house, a 1900's barn, the Bandy Blacksmith shop, the 1888 Santa Fe Depot, and a railroad car, are located in historic Grape Day Park.

Established in 1976 for the nation's Bicentennial, Heritage Walk displays buildings preserved from Escondido's early days. The structures were rescued from demolition and relocated to the park, where they serve as Escondido's historical museum complex.

Also included on Heritage Walk are:

  • A windmill moved from a ranch on North Broadway in 1976
  • A farm sculpture designed by Joyce Malcom in 1980
  • A time capsule buried on October 8, 1976, by the Escondido Bicentennial Committee to be opened on October 8, 2076
  • A tank house built by Reverend Hoffmann to provide running water and store household equipment
  • An herb garden reminiscent of the kitchen gardens in early homes in Escondido

1900's BarnVisitors are welcome to tour the buildings. Special tours, especially school tours, are available throughout the year.

All of our buildings are climate controlled, and wheelchair access is available. Parking is conveniently located near the depot.

The Escondido History Center cosponsors historic walking tours with the Escondido Citizen's Ecology Committee. For future dates, times, and meeting places, please call (760) 743-8207.
