For entry-level Firefighter/Paramedic positions, the Escondido Fire Department participates in the North County Joint Testing Process, administered through Palomar College. For information, including the application process, qualifications, and testing dates, contact the Fire Technology Department at Palomar Community College, The Escondido Fire Department accepts applications for Lateral Firefighter/Paramedics who have completed a recognized fire academy, have at least one year full-time field experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic responding to 9-1-1 calls, and have successfully completed probation with a city, state, county, federal or comparable fire department. The Escondido Fire Department also hires Non-Safety, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) on an as-needed basis. EMT applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the time of appointment and must have at least six months (full-time equivalent, e.g., 40 hours per week) field experience as an EMT-1 responding to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls and/or 9-1-1 first response calls. Job applications and resumes for other positions within the Escondido Fire Department are accepted only within a set time frame when there is an actual job opening, although the City of Escondido maintains a file of "interest cards" for those interested in specific positions. Interest cards are kept on file for one year and mailed out if an opening occurs.
