2007 Accomplishments – By The Numbers

  • Responded to over 10,000 calls for service including over 300 Fires calls and over 7,900 EMS calls
  • Fire Suppression and EMS personnel participated in over 34,000 hours of training
  • Completed 1,200 Fire Department plan checks
  • Completed 1,975 Fire and Life Safety Inspections of industrial and commercial businesses for compliance with Fire Code requirements
  • Completed 2,285 Specialized Inspections
  • Responded to over 160 calls for Fire Investigation
  • Prepared and processed over 3,000 Fire Prevention business files for electronic imaging
  • Acquired and trained with a new grant-funded County Decontamination Unit
  • Implemented a new grant-funded, laptop-based GIS mapping system in Fire Apparatus
  • Continued grant coordination and financial administration efforts in 2007 for a total of five active Department of Homeland Security grants equaling over $350,000 dollars
  • Implemented a Firefighter Wellness Program through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant award; purchased and installed new treadmills and elliptical training equipment for all Fire Stations
  • Hired and trained six new Emergency Medical Technicians
  • Hired and trained three new Firefighter/Paramedics
  • Received approval for and promoted a new Battalion Chief for the Training Officer position
  • Promoted a second Battalion Chief for the "A" Shift position
  • Promoted two Fire Captains
  • Promoted two Fire Engineers
  • Conducted a Fire Captain's promotional exam
  • Continued oversight of the City's Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program.
  • Continue participation in the national Metropolitan Medical Strike Team program. The team consists of approximately 120 specially trained individuals who will help mitigate the effects of nuclear, biological or chemical terrorism. The EFD has three firefighters on the team.
  • Retrained and certified all Fire Department personnel in CPR
  • Retrained and certified 34 paramedics in Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Began participation in a nationwide investigational study on cardiac resuscitation outcome. Successfully trained all frontline EMTs and Paramedics (96 personnel) on study background, procedures, equipment and medication.
  • Fire Department EMTs and Paramedics taught CPR classes to 840 high school students, 266 coaches and teachers, 263 City employees, and 226 members of various community groups. For in-house recertification our instructors certified 150 FD employees, this includes Explorers & Senior Volunteers.
  • Also began teaching CPR classes in Spanish with great success. Groups that have benefited are the Head Start Program and churches. We've received very positive.
  • Began new Patient Satisfaction Survey in June 2007. Randomly surveyed approximately 30% of the patients who were transported by our EMS personnel. An average of 350 surveys per month are sent out. With data analyzed through August, the overall rating for service is as follows: Satisfied with Service - 96%; Not Satisfied with Service - 1%; No Answer to the Question - 3%.
  • Purchased and placed in service two replacement fire pumpers for Station 1 and Station 2; also purchased an additional fire pumper for the new Fire Station 7.
