At their May meeting, the Escondido City Council declared a Water Shortage Level 2-Water Alert Condition in response to a water use allocation mandated by the City's water wholesaler, San Diego County Water Authority. The declaration of a water shortage level 2 stems from regional water supply challenges including drought conditions for the past seven years and regulatory restrictions on water supplies from Northern California. As a result many of the state's major reservoirs have been drawn to very low levels.
All City water customers excluding the Ag customers and those that use recycled water must reduce their water usage by 8 percent beginning July 1st. At this time, no water shortage rates will be imposed; however, if the City of Escondido water customers do not conserve to meet the 8 percent reduction then City Council may impose the water shortage rates in the future.
