You may also request an application form by calling the County Registrar of Voters at (858) 565-5800 or visit their website at www.sdvote.com.

Who May Register

A person entitled to register to vote must be:

A United States Citizen
A resident of California
Not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony
At least 18 years of age at the time of the election.

When to Register

You can register anytime. However, to vote in an election, you must be registered at least fifteen (15) days before the election.

You Must Re-register If

You have changed your residence or mailing address, or
You have changed your name, or
You wish to change your political party affiliation.

How to Vote by Absentee Ballot

Absentee ballots are available twenty-nine (29) days before Election Day. To get your absentee ballot, use the application on the back of your sample ballot. If you wish to receive an absentee ballot by mail, a written application must be on file with the County Registrar of Voters at least seven (7) days before the election. If you want to apply and have not received your sample ballot, you may apply in person or by letter to: Registrar of Voters, 5201 Ruffin Road, San Diego, CA 92123. For further information, please contact the Registrar of Voters at (858) 694-3400.

Important

Before every election, you will be sent a sample ballot and other election material. This information is not forwarded by the post office, so it is important that you are registered at your current address.

The sample ballot will give you information about the offices and measures on the ballot. Look it over before Election Day and decide how you want to vote. You may want to mark your sample ballot and take it with you to the polls to assist you in marking your official ballot. KEEP YOUR SAMPLE BALLOT – DO NOT TOSS IT UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION.

Citizen Participation

The Registrar needs public-spirited citizens to serve as Precinct Officers. Polling places are also needed, especially those accessible to the handicapped.

If you are interested in providing one or both of these important services, please call the Polls Section at (858) 565-5800, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, or call toll-free at 1-800-696-0136.
