NETWORK SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN I/II
(An Unclassified, At-Will Position)

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provides technical support for the City’s computer users;
  • Performs installation, testing, configuration and troubleshooting of hardware and software applications;
  • Ensures quality customer service to internal customers;
  • Assists City users by providing one-on-one guidance in resolving computer related problems;
  • Identifies and communicates frequent or special difficulties users are experiencing with network, hardware and software applications.

The ideal candidate for this position will:

  • Have knowledge of Windows 7, Windows XP, Microsoft Exchange, including the Outlook client and Windows Desktop applications;
  • Have the ability to maintain network servers, routers, switches and identify and resolve network connectivity issues;
  • Have knowledge of personal computer hardware and software components and their relationship to a LAN/WAN environment;
  • Have strong principles and practices in customer service and the ability to handle stressful situations.

Minimum requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent supplemented by college level course work in information systems, computer science or related field;
  • One year experience of information systems and programming experience in a networked environment.  Additional education or training in an appropriate discipline may be substituted for up to one year of work experience;
  •  A+, CompTia, or Microsoft Certified Professional certifications preferred;
  • Network Systems Technician II requires two years of increasingly responsible experience of information systems and programming experience in a networked environment.  Additional education or training in an appropriate discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the work experience.  Must be a certified Cisco Network Associate or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.  Other specialized course work and training that provides a comparable level of knowledge may be qualifying.

Unclassified Clerical/Technical employees currently participate in a furlough program to help reduce the budget deficit, resulting in a salary reduction of 5% per pay period.

Salary Ranges: Technician I: $3,206 - $3,897; Technician II: $3,539 - $4,301 per month (monthly salaries do not reflect the pay reduction due to the above mentioned furlough), plus an outstanding benefits package.  Benefits may vary by bargaining unit or group, but all regular employees receive the following generous benefit package:

Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process.

When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list. Qualification by a medical examination may be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status.
